【原文】

齊景公待（1）孔子，曰：「若季氏則吾不能，以季、孟之間（2）待之。」曰：「吾老矣。不能用也。」孔子行。

【英文】

In considering the treatment he should accord Confucius, Duke Jing of Qi said, “I am unable to accord him such exalted treatment as the Ji family receives.” So he placed him somewhere between the Ji and the Meng, saying, “I am getting old. I am afraid I will not be able to put his talents to use.” Confucius departed.

【注釋】

（1）待，遇也，已祿位接遇孔子。

（2）季孟之間，魯三卿，季氏最貴。孟，指孟孫氏。言齊君欲以魯君待季氏與孟孫氏之間之禮待孔子。

【翻譯】

齊景公談到對待孔子的禮節，說：「要我像魯君對待季氏般對待孔子，那我是不能這樣做，我將以魯君對待季氏與孟孫氏之間的禮節對待孔子。」後來齊景公又說：「我老了，不能重用孔子了。」於是孔子離開齊國。

【主旨】記孔子失所去齊。
