【原文】

子貢問「友」（1）。子曰：「忠告（2）而善道（3）之，不可則止，毋自辱焉。」

【英文】

Zi-gong asked about how friends should be treated. The Master said, “Advise them to the best of your ability and guide them properly, but stop when there is no hope of success. Do not ask to be snubbed.”

【注釋】

（1）友，言交友之道。

（2）忠告，友有過，盡己心以告之，使之勸善。

（3）道，同「導」。以義導之。

【翻譯】

子貢問交朋友的方法。孔子說：「朋友有過失，忠心勸告他，並且好好開導他，朋友如果不接受，便要停止勸導，不要自討沒趣而遭受侮辱。」

【主旨】論交友之道。
