【原文】

季路問事鬼神（1）。子曰：「未能事人，焉（2）能事鬼？」「敢問死？」曰：「未知生，焉知死？」

【英文】

Ji-lu asked how the spirits of the dead and the gods should be served. The Master said, “You are not able even to serve man. How can you serve the spirits?” “May I ask about death?”

“You do not understand even life. How can you understand death?”

【注釋】

（1）問事鬼神，問祀奉鬼神之道。對天曰神，人歸曰鬼。

（2）焉，何，怎麼。

【翻譯】

子路問怎樣侍奉鬼神。孔子說：「活人還不能侍奉，怎麼能侍奉死人呢？」子路又問：「我大膽的請問人死後怎樣？」孔子回答說：「生前的事尚且不能知道，怎麼能知到死後的事呢？」

【主旨】孔子不道無益之語。
