【原文】

陳司敗（1）問昭公（2）知禮乎，孔子曰：「知禮。」孔子退，揖巫馬期（3）而進之，曰：「吾聞君子不黨（4），君子亦黨乎？君取於吳，為同姓（5），謂之吳孟子（6）。君而知禮，孰不知禮？」巫馬期以告。子曰：「丘也幸，苟有過，人必知之。」

【英文】

Chen Si-bai asked whether Duke Zhao was versed in the rites. Confucius said, “Yes.” After Confucius had gone, Chen Si-bai, bowing to Wu-ma Qi, invited him forward and said, “I have heard that the gentleman does not show partiality. Does he show it nevertheless? The Lord took as wife a daughter of Wu, who thus is of the same clan as himself, he allows her to be called Wu Meng Zi. If the Lord is versed in the rites,who isn’t?”

When Wu-ma Qi recounted this to him, the Master said, “I am a fortunate man. Whenever I make a mistake, other people are sure to notice it.”

【注釋】

（1）陳司敗，陳國名。司敗，官名，即司寇。

（2）昭公，魯君，名裯。

（3）巫馬期，姓巫馬，名施，字期，孔子弟子。

（4）黨，相助匿非。

（5）君取於吳為同姓，言魯與吳皆姬姓，古禮不娶同姓。取，通「娶」。

（6）吳孟子，昭公之夫人，吳國之女子，當稱吳姬，稱孟子，諱娶同姓。

【翻譯】

陳國的司寇問孔子：「魯昭公懂得禮節嗎？」孔子說：「懂得。」孔子走了以後，陳國的司寇向巫馬期作揖，請他進來，然後說道：「我聽說君子不袒護人的過錯，難道君子也偏袒人的過錯嗎？魯君從吳國娶了一位夫人，因為是同姓，所以諱稱她為吳孟子。魯君這樣做如果都算是懂得禮節的話，還有誰不懂得禮節呢？」巫馬期把這番話告訴了孔子。孔子說：「我孔丘很幸運，如果有點過錯， 人家一定會知道。」

【主旨】人對自己生命之成就之態度，禮。
